GITHEMBE -- Instant Coffee Pouches (box of 6)
Instant coffee. Most people think “Blech!” when they hear the words. But why? Mostly it’s because the quality level of coffees that get freeze dried as instant coffee is abysmally low. But why? Why not turn specialty coffee into specialty instant coffee for the fastest, tastiest cup you can make anywhere you have hot water. That’s exactly what we’ve done.
WHO SHOULD DRINK THIS? Campers, hikers, outdoorsy folks of all types who want to travel light but not sacrifice taste when it comes to coffee. Really, anyone who wants the most delicious instant coffee they’ve ever tasted.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE? Githembe is all about the juice. Blood orange juice bombs with a jammy finish.
WHAT MAKES THIS COFFEE SPECIAL? There once was a shining coffee known as Githembe. Years ago we sourced a Kenya coffee from scratch after an exhaustive ten day trek across the country. We visited mills, cooperatives, farms and smallholders in search of the perfect cup. When we returned home to the U.S. and cupped all the samples we brought back, there was one clear winner. For several years we sourced Githembe directly from the people we met on that trip. In its heyday, we once calculated that we were buying over 85% of all the Githembe produced each year. The last year we carried it we decided to send a few hundred pounds to an innovative company to freeze dry and package it in convenient individual instant coffee packets. We no longer have access to Githembe, but thanks to the freeze drying project it is (and will be) still enjoyable for years.
